The Century Cycle Challenge

  Poster 2010

The FORCE Century Cycle Challenge will take place on Sunday 27th June 2010.

The cycle is now in its 11th year and attracts over 650 cyclists, predominantly from Devon, but also from other parts of the UK and overseas. The event follows the local training route ridden by Marc Millon and Nello Ghezzo in preparation for their epic ride from Topsham to Venice in 1997. Nello tragically died of cancer in 1999 and this cycle ride, at the end of June, has become an annual tribute to Nello. The FORCE Century Cycle Challenge has raised approximately £235,000 to date.

The classic hundred mile peddle from Topsham over the roof of Exmoor and back is one of the highlights of the annual cycling calendar. However this is also a shorter 55 mile route which links up with the main route for those not so mad!

The event now raises in excess of £40,000 for FORCE Cancer Charity. The ride is an absolute classic, not just because the route is at once beautiful and challenging, but also because of quality and quantity of delicious food encountered all along the way. No other ride in England can match ours for the sheer generosity - of spirit as well as food - that you will find along the way.

Route updates - January 2010
21.01.2010 11:15

We went out with the Bike Shed earlier this week and have started to assess signage on the routes for 2010. You will be glad to hear that we are looking at putting directional updates more or less every mile. We will also include a lot more signs for traffic to be aware of the ride for 2010.

Now that we have over 600 cyclists we also need to consider some parts of the route in terms of logistics! We will therefore be likely to make amends in the following areas:

Tiverton Rugby Club will be our new first stop. We are likely to reach it by cycling through the town rather using the one way system.

Morchard Road - we will be signing the route through Shoebrooke for 2010. We fully understand that many of the long standing cyclists might prefer to use the A377 and that will be their choice - however, for safety reasons we will indicate that we would like to direct cyclists away from the most difficult part of the A377 between Crediton and Exeter.

Finally, we aim to utilise the cycle path along the canal from Exeter back to Topsham.

As at 21st January 2010 you have raised £43,652.97 from the 2009 cycle ride - this is absolutely superb and thank you so much!
